Samuel C. McKnight is one of the founders of the firm, McKnight, Canzano, Smith, Radtke & Brault. He graduated from Georgetown University in 1967 with a Phi Beta Kappa key. He received a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Michigan in 1973 and has been a member of the Michigan State Bar since 1973. He is admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court, the Sixth, Tenth and District of Columbia United States Courts of Appeal. He has practiced in federal district courts in Michigan, Illinois, New York and Ohio.

Sam has personally been awarded the highest rating (AV) by Martindale Hubbell. He is listed in Naifeh and Smith’s Best Lawyers in America in the field of labor and employment law. Sam is also a Superlawyer. He has served on the Board of the AFL-CIO Lawyers coordinating committee and as the Chair of the Labor and Employment Law Section Council of the State Bar of Michigan.

Sam has been recognized nationally for his expertise in providing labor organizations with consultation and leadership during difficult contract negotiations. He coordinated several high profile contract campaigns for labor organizations, including those at the New York Daily News, DTE Energy, the Detroit News and Free Press, the Seattle Times, the Toledo Blade, FOX-TV, Storer Broadcasting, WDIV- TV, the Detroit Area Beer Distributors and Con Edison. He has also been involved in large scale workers struggles, including First Energy multi-state contract campaigns and the American Water nationwide contract campaign.

Sam represents both public sector and private sector unions in contract negotiations and benefit issues, including the House Officers Association (University of Michigan), Iron Workers Locals, the Bricklayers, Utility Workers Local, SEIU International, various SEIU locals, Teamsters Locals, the UAW International and various locals, the Toledo Blade unions, and various Broadcast Employees (NABET) locals. Sam is counsel to the Michigan Teamsters Joint Council #43, and for many years he was General Counsel to the Utility Workers Union of America.

Sam has frequently been a speaker at law schools, at lawyers’ conferences and at union conferences throughout the country on strategies and tactics in campaigns to achieve union goals through leverage and bargaining.
